The Story of My Mom, Ruby
In honor of my mom, Nicole’s grandma, we started Love, Ruby.
Grandpa and Grandma Ludwig both passed away the year I turned 40, just six months apart. They left behind eight children and countless wonderful memories of family, hunting, time spent together, and, of course, the homemade clothes and quilts lovingly made by my mom, Ruby.
I didn't sew much as a child. My mom taught me the basics, but I never imagined how important sewing would one day become in my own life.
She was often at her sewing machine making clothes for us, but her quilts were especially meaningful. We still cherish them today. My own children grew up wrapped in her quilts, and they continue to bring our family so much comfort.
In the fall of 2025, I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Thankfully, it was grade one, and after surgery, I was given the all-clear. During my six weeks away from work to recover, I found myself sitting at my mom's old sewing machine and making cosmetic bags.
The first few were not the prettiest. But something kept bringing me back to that machine. With every project, I learned something new, and little by little, I started getting better.
Eventually, my two girls, Nicole and Ashleigh, started saying, “Mom, you should sell these!”
So, I gave it a try—and people actually liked them!
As a mom of three—TJ (22), Ashleigh (20), and Nicole (16)—I hadn’t had much time for hobbies while working full-time. But sewing quickly became something I looked forward to. I turned the office in our basement into my sewing room, and that's where all the magic happens!
And then there’s the name.
“Love, Ruby” came from a box of letters my mom had written to her best friend. Reading those letters gave us a little glimpse into her life, her personality, and the way she loved the people around her. We knew we wanted to carry that love forward.
My daughter Nicole took my mom’s actual handwriting from one of those letters and turned it into the Love, Ruby logo.
Today, Nicole is my partner in this adventure, making it even more special. Together, we get to create something that started with a sewing machine, a few not-so-great first bags, and a mom whose love and creativity are still woven into our family.
Every Love, Ruby bag is made with a little bit of that story in it.
